Choice of plants for sunny borders

This question was asked by
Jean G

I have bought heucheras to grow in pots from you , which I am delighted with! Now I have decided I would like something from you to go at the front of 2 borders, to save putting in begonias every year. I have 2 borders about 7 foot wide with an arch in middle. Borders are south facing, and both have assorted green bushes and a few taller flowers, behind where I want these smaller plants Would have liked both borders matching, but drainage on one has poor drainage {clay soil} if we have a lot of rain. I love your new fleur plant {to go in better drained one} and wonder if you could suggest anything else similar to plant alternately with this  Also if you could suggest any of you perenials or anything else to go in poor drainage side, I would be so grateful! See you soon as I have another order being processed!

Hi Jean
Pleased your enjoying your plants from us
On the wet side the heucheras will struggle
There isn’t any way around that unless you can raise the border or improve the soil etc
So only plants that we will be doing shortly is candelabra primrose we will have 3 varieties red, pink and orange this year (coming to website next few weeks plants grown but not had time to put on yet )
Plants to mix with heuchera fleur would be black taffeta, bilberry Cajun fire and forever purple (last two ready soon )
Hope this helps
Kind regards Vicky

Could you advise if tiarellas would grow in dry soil under the above. It has a very wide trunk so different sides have different aspects. Thank you,

Hi Sarah
Tiarellas will grow in the shady areas
If its very dry all the time they will need some water
Hope this helps

Hi Evi
Not quite sure what your looking for but if you mean will they grow well with acers? Then yes most will do well and look good around them, as long as you have good drainage

Advice for rock garden

This question was asked by
Heather J

The garden has clay soil and I have a rock garden which seems to dry out. It’s mostly shade to semi-shade. Can you recommend any of your plants for this position? I also have a border at the back of the garden, shaded which also seems to dry out. Can you suggest any of your plants for this?

With thanks

Hi heather
For that sort of shade part shade you need to go for heucherella tiarella and heucheras with light coloured foliage such as the one below
You also need to check that the ground doesn’t get water logged in winter as they hate getting water logged
Hope this helps

Pairing/Compoanion

This question was asked by
Alex

I have just planted 4 different colour variants of coral bells in a large square timber container with a timber bird feeding pole rising from the centre. this sits in a the centre of a southwest facing garden to cover an unsightly manhole cover. My question is what flowers or other structural plants go well with what I have planted from an aesthetic and ecologically beneficial point of view.

Hi Alex
It’s a tricky question as it’s very much personal choice
I love hardy Geraniums with heucheras
As you can see I’ve attached Rozanne below
Hope this helps
Kind regards
Vicky
